Computers: Do The Eyes Have It?

More and more Australian workers spend some
of their work hours in front of a computer screen. Paul Somerville reports on
current thinking about whether screen-based work poses a serious threat to the
eyes.
Few would dispute that good vision is one of
the most important aspects of good health and wellbeing. Sight is arguably the
most vital of the senses, both for experiencing the world and participating
within it.
For those of us who are sighted, it is hard
to imagine a waking hour, or even moment when we don't depend on our eyes for
essential information, They guide our decisions from moment to moment. In our
occupations, our eyes are critical. Whatever our industry or job position,
sight is important for most tasks in most jobs.
All this may seem perfectly obvious, but I'm
labouring the point in order to contrast the fundamental importance of eyesight
with the blase attitude to eye protection that exists in some workplaces.
In Australia, eye injuries are by no means
rare at work. According to WorkSafe WA, for example, about 7 per cent of all
lost-time injuries in Western Australia involve eyes. In the metal products
manufacturing industry, this figure is more than 20 per cent.
